The museum was founded in 1857 and the collections form a record of mans greatest inventions and achievments.
The collection consists of over 200,000 exhibits on seven floors - many of them are interactive, - including such outstanding items as Stephenson's Rocket to the Apollo 10 space capsule (it took just under 400,000 people to get the Apollo off the ground.)
You can carry out your own experiments in Launch Pad - a large learning and play area - or test your skills and fly a model Harrier jump jet in Flight Lab.
Learn about health using the fantastic interactive exhibits in Health Matters and discover lots, lots more.
The Science Museum also organises "Science Night", an "all night extravaganza with a scientific twist" where up to 380 children aged between 8 and 11,accompanied by adults, spend an evening performing fun "science based" activities and then spend the night sleeping in the galleries museum amongst the exhibits.
For the first time the Science Museum is opening its doors for an adult only evening, in September 2008. The adult-only Dana Centre at London's Science Museum is a venue that allows you to explore issues in contemporary science through dialogue, interaction, performance and art. The air-conditioned, licensed d.café at the Dana Centre serves a wide variety of food and drink. Most events are free - Science Museum Lates: For details and booking - Call 020 7942 4040 or e-mail tickets@danacentre.org.uk.
