The
museum is located in a building close to the Barbican
Centre, approximately 10 minutes' walk north of St Paul's
Cathedral and is the largest, most comprehensive city museum
in the world.
It is operated by the Corporation of London and was
opened in the 1970s, utilising collections previously held
by the Corporation at the Guildhall and also items from
other collections.
The museum comprises a series of chronological galleries
containing original artefacts, models, pictures and
diagrams, clothing, room reconstructions, 18th century
prison cells and Mithraic treasure.
The Museum traces the fascinating story of London from
prehistoric times to World War I.
Highlights include: the Lord Mayor's ceremonial coach.
The Great Fire of London experience. The Medieval London
gallery, which explores some of the most turbulent years in
history from the end of Roman rule to the accession of
Elizabeth I.
